Education and Tidepool Tours

Tidepool Exploration Group Policy

The City of Laguna Beach welcomes all visitors to the Laguna Beach Tidepools.  To ensure your trip is enjoyable as well as safe for both participants and marine life, we require that all groups give prior notification to the Marine Protection Officer of a visit to any of the Laguna Beach tidepools. 

The City of Laguna Beach Marine Safety Department also offers a Tidepool Education Program.  The program includes a guided tidepool tour and marine ecology lecture on the day of the visit as well as an informational packet for pre-trip preparation and post trip activities.  To participate in our tidepool education program please email callison@lblg.org with the following information.  

A. School/Group Name, Address and phone #

B. 3 options for trip dates. Tide should be below 1.2 at arrival time.

C. Contact Name and Cell Phone #

D. Number of classes/total number of participants

E.  Age/Grade level of students/participants

 

Prior to your trip

A.  Review the information with parents teachers,& students.

 

B. Heisler Park is a State Marine Reserve: all rocks, shells, animals, & plants must not be removed or disturbed.  This applies to teachers and chaperones too!

Supervision 

A. For safety, please follow these general child to adult ratios-

2nd grade & up—1 adult: 10 children

1st grade & below--1 adult: 5 children

 

B. Have groups arranged prior to arrival.

 

C. Please review “Good Tidepooler” rules prior to arrival.

 

Payment

The cost for a guided tour, lecture and educational packet is $35 per classroom (payable to City of Laguna Beach).  All students will receive additional materials on the day of their tour.

 

Tidepool Trip Day

A. Review safety rules with students.

B. Wear tennis shoes that will not be ruined if they get wet.

C. Leave lunches & backpacks on the bus. It is dangerous for the students to walk on the tidepools with full hands.

D. Allow adequate time for bus travel, bathrooms breaks, etc.  Please notify us if you will be arriving late or you may not be accommodated.
